Why Visit Pokhara?

Pokhara is Nepal's second-largest city and, for many travellers, the most beloved. Sitting at 822 metres above sea level on the shores of Phewa Lake, with the dramatic Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges as its backdrop, Pokhara strikes a near-perfect balance between natural beauty, adventure, and laid-back lakeside living.

Whether you're gearing up for the Annapurna Circuit, recovering from a trek, or simply soaking in the mountains over a lakeside coffee, Pokhara delivers. Many travellers who planned three days end up staying two weeks.

Getting to Pokhara from Kathmandu

There are two main ways to travel from Kathmandu to Pokhara:

  • By air: A short 25–30 minute flight with stunning mountain views — subject to weather delays. Pokhara's new international airport opened in 2023.
  • By bus: The scenic Prithvi Highway journey takes 6–8 hours depending on traffic and road conditions. Tourist buses are comfortable and affordable; local buses are cheaper but slower.

Top Attractions in Pokhara

Phewa Lake

The centrepiece of Pokhara is Phewa Lake — a calm, mirror-like expanse that reflects the Annapurna range on clear mornings in a way that stops you in your tracks. Rent a wooden rowing boat for an hour, or paddle to the small island temple of Tal Barahi in the middle of the lake. The lakeside promenade (Lakeside Road) is lined with restaurants, cafés, and shops.

Sarangkot Sunrise

Rising early for the sunrise view from Sarangkot Hill (1,600m) is a Pokhara rite of passage. On clear mornings, the sight of Machapuchare (Fishtail Peak), Annapurna I, II, III, and IV, and Dhaulagiri catching the first orange light is nothing short of extraordinary. Take a taxi or hike up — the hike takes 1.5–2 hours from Lakeside.

World Peace Pagoda

Pokhara's World Peace Pagoda (Shanti Stupa) sits on a ridge south of Phewa Lake, offering panoramic views of the city, lake, and mountains. It's accessible by a 45-minute hike from the southern lakeside or by boat and a short uphill walk. The Japanese-funded pagoda is a peaceful, photogenic site.

Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave

Near the Seti River Gorge, this deep limestone cave contains a sacred Shiva shrine and offers an interesting geological detour. The cave leads to a dramatic viewpoint overlooking the Devi's Fall waterfall — most impressive during and after the monsoon season.

Paragliding

Pokhara is one of the world's great paragliding destinations, with thermals that allow flights of up to 90 minutes over the lake and mountains. Tandem flights with certified pilots are available from multiple operators in Lakeside — it's an unforgettable experience even for first-time flyers.

Annapurna Trekking Trails

Pokhara is the gateway to some of Nepal's most popular treks:

  • Annapurna Base Camp (ABC): 10–14 days round trip, through rhododendron forests to 4,130m
  • Annapurna Circuit: 15–20 day classic circumnavigation of the Annapurna massif
  • Poon Hill Trek: 4–5 days, a gentler route ideal for first-time trekkers with excellent mountain views

All treks require an ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Permit) and TIMS card, available in Pokhara before you set out.
