What Is Thamel?
Thamel is a dense, lively neighbourhood in the heart of Kathmandu that has served as the city's traveller district for decades. Crammed with guesthouses, restaurants, trekking gear shops, travel agencies, bookstores, and bars, it's the first stop for most international visitors and a useful base for exploring the wider city and planning Himalayan adventures.
For all its tourist-oriented commerce, Thamel is also a genuinely interesting neighbourhood — narrow alleys, rooftop terraces, incense smoke, honking motorbikes, and the distant sound of Tibetan singing bowls create an atmosphere unlike anywhere else on earth.
Getting to Thamel
Thamel is located in the northern part of central Kathmandu, about 5–6 km from Tribhuvan International Airport. Getting there is easy:
- Taxi from the airport: The most convenient option; agree on a price before getting in, or insist on the meter. Typical fare: 500–700 NPR
- Pre-booked hotel pickup: Many guesthouses offer free or low-cost airport transfers
- Public bus or microbus: Cheap but complicated for first-time arrivals with luggage
Where to Stay
Thamel offers accommodation at every price point, from ultra-budget dorms to characterful mid-range boutique hotels. A few general tips:
- The closer to the main Thamel chowk (intersection), the more noise — choose streets further in for quieter nights
- Paknajol (northern Thamel) and Jyatha (southern fringe) are slightly calmer but still well-connected
- Always inspect your room before checking in — standards vary enormously within the same price range
What to Do in Thamel
Gear Up for Trekking
Thamel is one of the world's great centres for affordable outdoor and trekking equipment. You'll find everything from down jackets and sleeping bags to trekking poles and merino wool base layers. Quality ranges from name-brand originals to local replicas — inspect items carefully and be willing to bargain.
Explore the Backstreets
Wander away from the main drag and you'll discover small temples, old Newari courtyard houses, local vegetable markets, and chai shops where residents go about their daily lives. The neighbourhood around Thamel Chowk and Chhetrapati is especially rich in unexpected discoveries.
Eat Well
The restaurant scene in Thamel is diverse — from excellent dal bhat to Tibetan momos, Italian pizza, Japanese ramen, and rooftop bars. While purely tourist-facing restaurants exist, there are also genuinely good local spots if you explore a little. Look for places busy with local diners as a quality indicator.
Book Tours and Treks
Thamel is full of trekking agencies and tour operators. If booking here, always check for government registration (TAAN or NTB certification), ask for references, and get everything in writing. Compare a few operators before committing.
Staying Safe in Thamel
- Watch for overcharging in tourist-facing shops — always ask the price before picking anything up
- Be cautious of strangers who offer to take you to "better" shops — this is a common commission scam
- Keep valuables secure; bag snatching from motorbikes does occur on busier streets
- Thamel is generally safe to walk at night, but stick to well-lit streets and avoid isolated alleys after midnight
